With the sixth grade, we had an incredible experience. We descended 47 meters deep into the undeveloped cave system of the Pálvölgyi Cave. Of course, not on a rope… The path led us downward through cold, damp, slippery, clay, and rocky terrain, so that we could then climb upwards, and then again upwards to slide down using our pants as brakes. Fortunately, we had professional caving gear, helmets, and headlamps, so parents will only have a bit of work with the shoes. And we also had a guide who led us through unbelievably narrow gaps and cavities. So we somewhat experienced what it’s like to be a cat: if our head fits through, our body won’t get stuck either. In theory. Luckily, no one got stuck anywhere. However, our breath did, a bit, when we turned off our headlamps and experienced true darkness, something we had never “seen” before. It felt strange to return to the light from the cold darkness; it was as if we had stepped into a very colorful movie. I think I can say on behalf of all of us that we almost felt reborn as we saw the daylight.
